NewSong Contest Finalist!!
Good morning.
I’m excited. Last night on some quiet street in rainy Los Angeles as the car refused to start up, I started checking emails on my phone while trying and trying to make the starter turn, turn, turn. The car had no luck but on my phone I saw a new message from a mister Gar Ragland (what a great name) titled “Congratulations from the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest.”
So….. I’m one of 12 (woohooo!) Finalists (woohooo!) that get to play on Oct. 21st in New York which is super fantastic in of itself, but even better, the winner gets to play live on NPR’s Mountain Stage and record an EP with Jacquire King.
I couldn’t be more of a fan of either. Right now in celebration of fandom, I’m listening to Mule Variations, which Jacquire King engineered and mixed. Best record ever. Tom Waits is my favorite. Get behind the mule!
Music is amazing. Lately my focus has swung over to “life” which is maybe the first time I can remember that being the case. The focus hasn’t always been music, in the last 10 years it’s moved from greeting my next table as a waitress at Red’s Old 395 BBQ in Carson City, NV…. to carving wooden figures with a chainsaw (for 3 years)… to making enough money to drive to the next city in my car/home and maybe even eat a bite… and on to writing songs. I must say the songs are where my purest of heart is. I feel lucky anytime I can have that as my focus.
But these past few months I’ve swung over to living. Finding a balance, eating well, dreaming again, sleeping like a normal person, learning new things like Japanese and reading books on Child Psychology. Playing guitar and piano (I’m newly obsessed with Cole Porter) for the fun of it instead of for a new song or anything to do with career. Spending time with people I love and meeting new people. Watching movies even. If you know me, that’s rare (cinema narcolepsy.)
It’s been a good jaunt but I’m feeling the songs and poetry start to bubble up again in a way I can’t ignore. I’m not naturally good at balance, more of an obsessive type but my goal now is to find some balance between life and music. Write a lot, live a lot. We’ll see how it goes.
If anyone reads this (I actually don’t even know how to find these blog things myself, it’s always an accident) then thank you. And I hope to see you soon. Some fun tours coming up with two songwriters I’m a huge admirer of. Adam Levy and Andi Almqvist. I posted the dates below in case you want to come.
